Topical vs. Oral Magnesium: Which One Should You Take?

Magnesium is one of the most foundational minerals in the human body. It plays a role in over 800 enzymatic processes, making it essential for nearly every system that keeps us alive and functioning well. From cellular energy production to nervous system regulation, magnesium supports most of the body’s vital functions.

This essential mineral helps reduce inflammatory markers, supports cardiovascular health, balances blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and contributes to proper cognitive function. Magnesium is also necessary for ATP synthesis, the process that produces the energy our cells rely on to function. In many ways, magnesium is the mineral that helps the body maintain its rhythm and stability.

Magnesium Deficiency

Clinical studies estimate that over 60% of Americans are deficient in magnesium. This raises an important question: why are deficiency levels so high? Modern agricultural practices have depleted the mineral content of our soils, meaning the foods we eat often contain far fewer minerals than they once did. Chronic stress, medications, high sugar intake, and hormonal/digestive imbalances can also deplete magnesium stores or impair our ability to absorb it properly.

Because of this, it becomes essential that we remineralize the body. Minerals like magnesium allow our organs, cells, glands, and tissues not only to function, but to function EFFICIENTLY. When mineral levels are low, the body has to work harder to maintain balance.

A magnesium deficiency can have widespread effects. Since magnesium participates in hundreds of biochemical reactions, even a mild deficiency can create ripple effects throughout the body.

Oral Magnesium

Oral magnesium is the form most people are familiar with. It typically comes in capsule or powder form and is taken by mouth, similar to most dietary supplements.

There are several types of oral magnesium available, each with slightly different properties and absorption characteristics. Some of the most common include:

    •    Magnesium citrate

    •    Magnesium glycinate

    •    Magnesium malate

    •    Magnesium oxide

    •    Magnesium taurate

These forms can support different aspects of health. My teacher Dr. Yahki often recommends magnesium glycinate as the best form to take orally because it's readily available to be absorbed in the gut.

However, oral magnesium does rely on the digestive system for absorption. If someone has low stomach acid, gut inflammation, or digestive imbalances, the body may not absorb magnesium as efficiently as intended.

This is where topical magnesium plays a huge role!!

Topical Magnesium

Topical magnesium is applied directly to the skin in the form of magnesium oils, sprays, or bath flakes. Unlike oral supplements, topical magnesium is absorbed through the skin and enters the tissues more directly.

Because it bypasses the digestive system, topical magnesium can be helpful for individuals who struggle with digestive absorption or who experience gastrointestinal discomfort from oral magnesium.

Many people also find topical magnesium beneficial for targeted support sore muscles, areas of tension, or the bottoms of the feet before sleep.

So What’s the Difference?

Both oral and topical magnesium can play an important role in restoring healthy magnesium levels.

Oral magnesium helps support systemic replenishment through the digestive system and can provide steady daily intake. However, absorption may be limited for some individuals due to digestive factors.

Topical magnesium, on the other hand, allows the mineral to bypass the gut and absorb through the skin directly into tissues and cells. This can be especially useful when the body’s demand for magnesium is high or when digestive absorption is compromised.

For many people, the most effective approach is a combination of both methods. Oral supplementation provides foundational support, while topical magnesium offers an additional pathway for replenishing cellular magnesium levels.

As we continue to understand the widespread prevalence of mineral deficiencies, restoring magnesium levels becomes one of the most important steps in supporting overall health. When the body is properly mineralized, we can return back to balance and reclaim our power back.

Peace and Love, Family.
